- Program Director: Irwin Goldstein, MD
Fellowship Overview
This sexual medicine/prosthetic urology fellowship provides a unique opportunity for exposure to cutting edge medical care and research in the beautiful city of San Diego. Drs. Irwin Goldstein and Jordan Siegel offer a unique, one-year clinical fellowship in Sexual Medicine and Prosthetic Urology with the opportunity to learn management of sexual dysfunction for men and women, prosthetic urology, reconstructive urology, minimally invasive surgery and (MIS) for BPH as well as transgender care. The fellow will be credentialed in sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital and in urology at Scripps Green Hospital. In addition, there is an option to learn infertility in men from Martin Bastuba, MD. Exposure includes multiple health care environments including San Diego Sexual Medicine, Scripps Clinic Medical Group, Male Fertility and Sexual Medicine Specialists, and hospital-based telemedicine. The fellow will be expected to attend journal club, urology and sexual medicine conferences at Alvarado Hospital and Scripps Green Hospital, and present at various urology/sexual medicine rounds throughout the year. The fellow will submit abstracts and attend the annual meetings of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH), and the American Urological Association, as well as the ISSWSH Fall Course in women’s sexual health. Upon completion, the fellow will have an understanding of the continuum of care approach from clinic to surgery of both male and female sexual dysfunction, transgender hormonal care, incontinence, reconstructive urology, MIS for BPH, and optionally male infertility. This includes history taking, physical examination, laboratory tests and in office diagnostic procedures including how to perform tests and interpret results in both men and women with sexual health concerns. Innovation with Drs. Goldstein and Siegel is the theme of this uniquely collaborative fellowship with opportunities in cutting edge surgery, clinical trials, population-based medicine and telemedicine encounters.
Research Focus
The fellow will be expected to participate in clinical research at San Diego Sexual Medicine, with an opportunity to be involved in retrospective chart reviews and prospective studies including first in man research trials. SDSM has a research unit to help the fellow through the process including the development a research protocol, application for IRB approval, and regulatory requirements for conducting the investigation and recording the results. Research opportunities are available in such areas as hypogonadism, women’s sexual arousal, 5 alpha reductase inhibitor side effects, thermography and regenerative medicine. It is expected that research projects will lead to presentations at national and/or international meetings, as well as publications. Part of research process is learning how to write a manuscript suitable for publication. The amount of time devoted to research is based on the interests of the fellow. This experience serves as a training for the fellow for future research opportunities after completion of the fellowship.
