SMSNA Webinar Series: Penile Prosthesis Considerations in the MSM Population
Dr. Yafi is Associate Professor of Urology, Chief of the Division Men’s Health and Reconstructive Urology, Director of Men’s Health and Newport Urology at the University of California, Irvine. His practice is specialized in men’s health, erectile dysfunction, hypogonadism, Peyronie’s disease, prosthetic surgery, male voiding dysfunction/enlarged prostate and male infertility.
Dr. Yafi earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut. He then served his internship in General Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and subsequently completed his residency in Urology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He then completed a two year fellowship in Andrology, Sexual Medicine and Prosthetic Urology at Tulane University. Dr. Yafi is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
Dr. Yafi serves on numerous national and international society committees as both member and chair. With the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, he serves as chair of the Website Committee and has served as chair of the Abstract Review Committee for the 2017 annual meeting. He was the co-chair of the Scientific Committee for the 2020 annual meeting and chair of the Scientific Committee for the 2021 meeting. With the International Society for Sexual Medicine, he has served two terms as chair of the Grants and Prizes committee, one term as chair of the Consultation and Guidelines committee and is currently Chair of the Scientific Review committee. With the Société Internationale d’Urologie, he has served as chair of the Office of Education. Finally, he is a member of the American Urological Association Priapism guidelines. Dr. Yafi also serves as editor in chief of the Video Journal of Sexual Medicine. Dr. Yafi is the director of the International Advanced Male Prosthetics and the Advanced Men’s Health courses held yearly at UCI since 2018, was chair of the penile prosthetic courses at the Société Internationale d’Urologie congresses in Korea in 2018 and Greece in 2019 and was chair of the inflatable penile prosthesis course at the 2020 SMSNA meeting. Dr Yafi was also faculty member for 2 instructional courses at the 2022 AUA meeting (Reconstructive Urology for the General Urologist; Evaluation and Management of Peyronie’s Disease) and again at the 2023 AUA meeting (Reconstructive Urology for the General Urologist).
Dr. Yafi has an avid interest in both basic and clinical research. He has contributed more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, educational guidelines and book chapters, has been invited as a visiting professor and a speaker at multiple national and international venues, and has received multiple national and international awards and recognitions, including the University of California Irvine Rising Stars award in 2020 and the Sexual Medicine Society of North America Young Investigator Award of Excellence in 2022. Along with his wife Natalie, he is the co-editor of a book entitled “Effects of Lifestyle on Men’s Health."
Christian Nelson is the Chief of the Psychiatry Service and an Attending Psychologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with expertise in treating men with prostate cancer and other genitourinary malignancies. As the psychological liaison to Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Genitourinary and Sexual Medicine services, he provides short- and long-term counseling services to patients struggling with cancer-related issues. Dr. Nelson also works with the Center’s 65+ Program, providing psychological support for patients who are 65 and older, and co-facilitates a support group for patients dealing with the combined issues of cancer and aging.
Working with members of the symptom management, neurocognitive, and psychotherapy laboratories, Dr. Nelson has focused his research on cancer’s impact on quality of life in prostate and geriatric cancer patients, and on developing new psychotherapy approaches for these groups. Some specific studies he has conducted include the impact of sexual dysfunction following cancer treatment; the cognitive effects of hormonal therapy on prostate cancer patients; distress in African-American men with prostate cancer; and developing assessment measures and psychotherapy specific to geriatric patients.
Justin La graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his Urology residency training at the University of California, Irvine. He then complete a subspecialty fellowship in Andrology, Male Infertility and Sexual Medicine at Men’s Health Melbourne. He is currently a staff urologist at Kaiser Permanente San Rafael Medical Center. He has co-authored several articles and publications in male sexual medicine and has a special interest in LGBTQ+ healthcare.
Dr. Jake Miller is a current third-year resident physician with the Department of Urology at the University of California, Irvine. He completed his undergraduate training at Northwestern University with a degree in Psychology. He later matriculated to the Feinberg School of Medicine where he completed his medical degree and earned a simultaneous master's degree in medical humanities and bioethics. He joined the Urology Department at the University of California, Irvine, where he has remained active in clinical outcomes research featuring treatments for erectile dysfunction, hypogonadism, and other conditions relating to men’s health. Within his research on erectile dysfunction, he has focused on outcomes following inflatable penile prosthesis insertion in men who have sex with men.
Dallas Steele (aka known as “Jim Walker”), is a former television news anchor/reporter, now one of the top 50 gay adult pornstars in the world. Prior to adult movies, he worked at radio and television stations in Bakersfield, California; Dallas, Texas; Fresno, CA; Houston, Texas; and Fort Myers-Naples, Florida.
