Fellowship Overview
The Duke University Fellowship in Prosthetic Urology, Male Sexual Health, and Reconstructive Surgery is a one-year clinical and research fellowship endorsed by the Sexual Medicine Society of North American (SMSNA). The fellowship is designed to provide fellows with comprehensive postgraduate training in the disciplines of male sexual medicine, genitourinary prosthetics, male stress urinary incontinence, Peyronie’s Disease, cancer survivorship, and urethral stricture disease.

This is an operatively heavy fellowship where fellows will average 4 days per week in the operating room. In addition to high case volumes we offer wide-ranging research opportunities and substantial research infrastructure. Overall, the SMSNA fellowship at Duke University offers a transformative educational experience, providing fellows with the resources, mentorship, and expertise needed to become leaders in the field of sexual medicine and prosthetics.

Our Goals and Objectives are to become proficient at:

  • Evaluating patients with sexual dysfunction through a standardized approach including history, physical exam, laboratory tests, and imaging studies
  • Counseling patients on treatment strategies with a strong knowledge of the risks, benefits and expected outcomes
  • Managing complex penile implant cases including patients with altered anatomy, radiation injury, and corporal fibrosis
  • A standardized approach to diagnosing and treatment male stress urinary incontinence
  • Utilizing anastomotic and substitution urethroplasty techniques for urethral stricture disease
  • Offering the full spectrum of surgical and in-office procedures for Peyronie’s Disease
  • Teaching and assisting medical learners including medical students, residents, and APPs

Research Focus
Our research efforts focus on genitourinary prosthetics with a special interest in preventing and managing infectious and iatrogenic complications. We also enjoy developing novel surgical techniques in both reconstructive and prosthetic Urology. The Prosthetics Registry and Outcomes in Urology at Duke (PROUD) is a large-scale registry that facilitates both retrospective analysis and prospective studies in our penile implant patients. Furthermore, Duke University is a proud member of the Prosthetic Urology Multi-Institutional Partnership (PUMP), fostering collaboration among leading institutions to advance the field of prosthetic urology through shared resources and collective expertise. Fellows also have the opportunity to produce surgical videos for presentation at national meetings.
