- Program Director: Gerard Henry, MD
Fellowship Overview
The fellowship program is approved by the LSUH-S institutional GMEC and has been created with an intensive focus on prosthetic urologic surgery and male sexual dysfunction. The fellowship is designed for the graduating Chief Resident from an ACGME-accredited urology residency or for a practicing BC/BE urologist. The 12-month, salaried program is based in Shreveport, LA, and supported through a generous educational grant from American Medical Systems / Boston Scientific Corporation. Dr. Gerard Henry is a renowned expert in urologic prosthetic surgery. He has advanced the field of sexual dysfunction with years of research and publication, including the creation of the multiple widely-used surgical innovations. Dr. Henry is the leading prosthetic urologist by volume world-wide for AMS devices over the last five years, and the fellow can expect rigorous and thorough surgical training. The program provides training at a regional referral center with substantial volume in basic and complex prosthetic urology. The curriculum covers a multitude of disorders including: erectile dysfunction, male stress urinary incontinence, andrology, testicular hypofunction, and Peyronie’s disease. Fellows will learn diagnosis and evaluation of these conditions, along with management strategies including behavioral and pharmacological treatment, sophisticated surgical solutions, and minimally invasive options. The fellow will work primarily out of Ark-LaTex Urology, a busy urology practice in Shreveport, LA, with a state-of-the-art office, specialty clinic, and surgery center. An average week consists of five prosthetic urologic cases and additional sexual health surgeries. The goal of the LSUH-S Male Sexual Health Fellowship is to train the future of prosthetic urology, while continuing to improve patient care by advancing technique and generating research. After one year, fellows will be exceptionally well-trained and comfortable with developing their own private or academic practice in sexual dysfunction and prosthetic urology.
Research Focus
Dr. Henry is a recognized expert in the field and has published dozens of original articles, review
articles, and book chapters. He has written extensively on his groundbreaking surgical techniques, including: the Finger Sweep, the Mummy Wrap, and the New Length Measurement Technique. He was also one of the innovators of the revision washout, and appears to have published more peer-reviewed research papers in prosthetic urology than any other author in the last decade. Dr. Henry regularly collaborates with a number of other prominent sexual medicine experts, and the fellow will have four weeks a year to travel the country and perform clinical work and research with luminaries in the field.
Fellows are expected to assist Dr. Henry and his collaborators in producing clinical research that advances the sciences of sexual dysfunction and prosthetic urology. A large amount of rigorous clinical data is available and in addition Dr. Henry employs professional medical editors and statisticians for assisting in the writing of papers. The fellow will have one day a week of protected research time. Attendance (and presentation) at the SES-AUA, SMSNA, ISSM, and AUA meetings is expected. The fellow will also have an appointment with the Department of Urology at LSUH-S as a Fellow-Attending, which includes clinical duties at either the University Hospital or Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, both tertiary care facilities. In addition to teaching, the fellow will have the opportunity to recruit residents and medical students to assist in research.
