Robert J. Krane Annual Lecture Award

Dr. Robert J. Krane was a man who understood what was important. He was chair of urology at Boston University School of Medicine from 1980-1999, and during that time he supported faculty research in sexual function and dysfunction, with the department receiving continuous NIH research funding from 1988 to 2005. His interest in men’s sexual function drove the development, in 1978, of the New England Male Reproductive Center, focusing on multidisciplinary sexual medicine care. It is believed to be the first such facility on the Eastern seaboard. For his outstanding contributions to the field, Dr. Krane received the prestigious AUA Gold Cystoscope in 1982.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Krane was very involved in what is today the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM). He was the society’s third president, serving for two terms, and co-chaired the 1988 ISSM meeting in Boston. During his ISSM presidency, he promoted the idea of regional affiliate societies. Thus began the relationship between the Society for the Study of Impotence, now the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, as a regional affiliate of ISSM.

Dr. Krane passed away in 2001 at the age of 57. He was a cherished mentor, esteemed colleague, and friend to many. To honor Dr. Krane's long-time involvement in sexual medicine and his continued support of research in the field, SMSNA honors his memory through the named Dr. Robert J. Krane Annual Lecture.
